![]() ![]() I never thought he was going to die, though.”Īfter Lemmy’s death, an online campaign to get Ace Of Spades back in the charts pushed it to No.13, two spots higher than its original peak more than 35 years before. I did think that he wouldn’t make the gigs because he was so frail. “He looked so frail at the Classic Rock Awards,” says Clarke. Motörhead were due to play UK dates the following January, including two dates at Hammersmith Apollo, and the two of them talked about the guitarist joining them on both nights. The last time Clarke saw Lemmy was at the Classic Rock Awards in October 2015, two months before the singer’s death. It swiftly became a highlight of their live set. But if he said he wrote it in a Transit van, then you’ve got to believe him.”Īce Of Spades reached No.15 in the UK when it was released in November 1980. ![]() We’d say: ‘Man, we need some fucking lyrics for this.’ So he used to go for a shit and write the lyrics. “He might have written it in the fucking shitter for all I know,” Clarke says with a laugh. In typical myth-making fashion, he claimed to have written the lyrics in the back of a Transit van while speeding down the motorway at 90mph. The final piece in the jigsaw was Lemmy’s lyrics – an attempt, he said, to cram as many gambling references in as possible: the high one, snake eyes, dead man’s hand (and don’t forget the joker…). With its turbo-charged new riff and memorable breakdown, the track was beginning to sound special. Of course, at first we’re all doing it at different fucking times: ‘Come on, Phil, for fuck’s sake!’ ‘No, man, it’s you!’ But when we heard it, we thought: ‘Oh, it’s not bad.’” ‘Well, we’ll do it cos it’s you, Vic, but we ain’t gonna fucking use it.’ He set up a nice Neumann mic, and the three of us stood there with the blocks. “We were pissed or speeding and we were totally against it. “He said: ‘This is what we’ll do’,” explains Clarke. Amid the maracas and rattlesnake tails was a set of woodblocks which would provide the clacking sound during the breakdown. Maile also had what Clarke called “his box of tricks” – a cardboard box full of items used to provide sound effects. It was one of the only times we’d written in the studio.” “He made us look at that riff, so Lemmy and I started fucking around with it a bit. “Vic kind of questioned what we were doing with the song,” says Clarke. Producer Vic Maile, who had previously worked with Lemmy’s former band Hawkwind and who Clarke affectionately describes as “a nice bloke, very soft, big hooter, short hair”, played a big part in fixing both. ![]()

![]() ![]() In recent years, spalted wood has gained a vast, trendy reputation in woodworking projects, from guitar-making to furniture and even decorative wooden bowls.Īccording to woodworkers Suncatcher Studios, “The unique patterns and coloration of the spalting process can add value to wood which otherwise might have a low value.” Following this line, designers use spalted wood for stylish pieces like dressers or credenzas. According to the company, they also use spalted pieces for artistic value: “Our idea is to make the less colorful and interesting hardwoods, like bland Beech and Sycamore, more available and interesting to those in the visual arts.” For example, it was used in Italian Renaissances panel paintings. West & Sons write that spalted wood has a long history. These fungi are unafraid to set boundaries! Not so coincidentally, these are the most common spalting patterns within woodworking. Zone spalting, which appears as black lines with various levels of spacing, can also be a single mushroom defining itself. Instead, the shapes are drawn like battle lines - competing fungi within the wood create barricades of hardened mycelium to defend woody territory and resources. Unlike pigmentation or white rot, zone line spalting doesn’t require a specific mushroom species. If there are enough white pigments in the hyphae of the growing fungi, white rot may even leave a colored visual. White rot fungi consume lignin, leaving a stretched, psychedelic, marbling pattern in its wake. Pigmentation might be popular, but white rot patterning is more common. Like a white stain, the blue stain pigmentation comes from a high concentration in the hyphae walls of growing fungi. One of the most popular colors of wood that has been stained is blue. Pigmented spalt wood is high-value since it can take on unusual shades of pink or red, green, orange, black, yellow, or even purple. However, wood, where fungi have colonized and introduced a new color, is the most treasured. What draws folks to spalted wood is the change in pattern or grain. Recent research reveals that organisms like sugar maple and aspen are the preferred white rot and pigment fungi tree types. This is why it’s common to see hard maple or spalted beech wood with wild wavy patterns.īirchwood is another common type of spalted wood. While both deciduous hardwoods and coniferous softwoods can undergo this process, fungi - and the kind of spalting they induce - don’t occur evenly across all wood types.įor example, zone lines and white rot are more commonly found in hardwoods, which provide better conditions for the enzymes within white rotting fungi. Common types of wood species that become spalted Brown rot often isn’t used in woodworking or DIY spalting since it makes the material crumbly and highly unstable. This fungus is most common on conifers but can also grow among deciduous trees. Trametes Versicolor, or turkey tail mushrooms, are one such fungus that can create white pigmentation in spalted wood - but only if they don’t fruit.įinally, there are brown rot fungi, like Fistulina hepatica (beefsteak fungus). This is rare, as white pigmentation must be highly concentrated in the hyphae of the organism for it to show. However, some white rot varieties can create a similar visual effect. These mushrooms love to eat lignin, and the result is like a bleach stain pattern, less colorful than what pigmentation fungi create. Pigmentation fungi are primarily composed of the unclassified “imperfect” fungi group as well as ascomycetes. There are many types of spalting fungi, but they fall into only a few categories.įirst, there are pigmentation fungi, which grow and produce extracellular pigments internally within wood. Similarly, woodworkers looking to induce this punky pattern in non-natural methods must create and maintain these conditions and keep the temperature warm. Most natural spalting occurs in dead trees since decomposition leads to ample nitrogen and oxygen levels, a high moisture content, and an abundance of natural sugars. Instead, it takes a few conditions for it to occur. Spalting doesn’t happen to any old piece of wood. Instead, the fungal colony extracts nutrients from the biomaterial, leaving colors, dark lines, dots, and other patterns in the wood. It occurs when hungry fungi take over a piece of wood but don’t fruit. It’s different from the burl wood pattern (a growth unrelated to fungi) or the bore beetle patterning of ambrosia maple. Spalting is a type of pattern that occurs in wood grain due to the activity of fungi. ![]() ![]() But what is spalted wood, and how do you use it? What is spalting? Spalted wood is a trendy material that craftspeople worldwide are gravitating towards as its popularity has risen. If you’re interested in woodworking, interior design, or instrument making, you may have heard the term “spalted” before. ![]() ![]() And in the play’s climactic courtroom scene, Atticus turns away from the jury box and gives his final summation to the audience about the destructive power of hate, saying: “We can’t go on like this, we know. The script includes dozens of uses of the N-word and other racial epithets, which hit like a hammer every time. Its call to action hits so much harder now in the wake of the 2020 murder of George Floyd and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement. I first saw this play on Broadway in 2019, but on Wednesday night, it felt like I was discovering it anew. Or maybe it’s about the play’s burning flame of White supremacy, which is sadly still aglow today. Perhaps this fire curtain is a nod to that era, or it’s a reference to the house fire in the novel, where the town’s politically divided White neighbors join hands to rescue a neighbor from her burning home. In the ‘30s, asbestos-lined stage curtains were a common way to protect the audience from backstage conflagrations. Scenic designer Miriam Buether’s weathered courtroom and Finch front porch scenery hint at the long decline of the South and a stylized “fire curtain” hides the stage before each act. And Steven Lee Johnson has a sweet, ethereal innocence as their gentle-hearted childhood friend Dill. Melanie Moore is quirky as the socially awkward tomboy Scout as Jem, Justin Mark takes his character on a credible loss of innocence journey. When that didn’t happen, the production was expected to restart at the Music Box Theater in November. The play is narrated by the novel’s three youngest characters, who are all played with childlike humor, guilelessness and gawky physicality. Mockingbird, then starring Greg Kinnear as Atticus, went on what was intended to be a temporary hiatus on January 16, vacating the Shubert Theatre but vowing to return to the Belasco this summer. Original star Jeff Daniels returned to his role as Atticus in an effort to effectively re-launch the production, leaving the production for good in January, by which time Mockingbird, and other Broadway shows, were being hit hard at the box office by an upsurge in Covid cases. The Broadway production resumed performances in October 2021 following the 2020 Covid shutdown. Those productions reportedly will not be impacted by the Broadway closing. A national tour starring Richard Thomas as Atticus Finch launched in April, as did a West End production a month earlier. Mockingbird opened on Broadway in 2018 and quickly became one of theater’s hottest tickets, recouping the $7.5 million investment costs after just 19 weeks. Rudin continued, “I do not believe that a remount of Mockingbird would have been competitive in the marketplace.”Īlthough Rudin was believed to have discontinued taking an active role in the play’s production, he continues to control rights to the stage adaptation. Rudin, according to an email obtained by The Times, informed Sorkin and Sher that his decision “not to bring back TKAM has to do with my lack of confidence in the climate for plays next winter.” ![]() ![]() ![]() Rudin, of course, is the Broadway and Hollywood producer who ostensibly stepped away from all of his productions, including Mockingbird, following allegations of bullying and physical abuse of his staff. ![]() Peacock Taps Zaid Al-Asady To Lead Brand Creative ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Remote: Compressing objects: 100% (3/3), done.
